Safety & consent

What does consent actually mean?

  • Short answer
  • Reading level 13-15
  • Consent means you are choosing to do something, freely, and you can stop choosing at any time. It has to be informed, enthusiastic, ongoing and specific. Silence is not a yes, freezing is not a yes, and consent given earlier does not automatically apply later.

What this does and does not tell you

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Only a clinician can examine you, take your history and run tests. The same symptom has different causes in different people.

If something is sudden, severe, or getting worse quickly, get medical advice rather than reading on.
