What counts as an emergency?

  • Short answer
  • Reading level 13-15
  • Sudden and severe pain, pain that is rapidly getting worse, difficulty breathing, chest pain, heavy bleeding that will not stop, fainting, a sudden change in vision or speech, and any symptom that feels seriously wrong. For those, contact your local emergency number rather than reading online.

What this does and does not tell you

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Only a clinician can examine you, take your history and run tests. The same symptom has different causes in different people.

If something is sudden, severe, or getting worse quickly, get medical advice rather than reading on.
