Understanding your changing body

For most people this is the stage where puberty becomes impossible to ignore. This pathway covers the biology, the practical questions, and how to start finding trustworthy health information for yourself.

Assumes you know the basic body terms and explains the biology behind what you are noticing.

The awkward questions belong here

If you have a question you cannot ask anyone out loud, you are exactly the reader this pathway is written for. Every topic below is covered on this site in the same plain language as everything else, including the ones people find hardest to search for.

What this stage is actually like

This is the age band where body changes become visible to other people, and where the pressure to look a certain way really starts. That pressure is not a health matter, and treating it as one is how people end up doing harmful things to their bodies.

Context

What is different at this age

  • Puberty is usually well underway, and may already be close to finished.
  • Your body is no longer private in the way it was — that is about other people's behaviour, not about you.
  • You may be having your first sexual experiences, and you deserve real information, not rumour.
  • Online is now often your first source of health information, which means misinformation matters more here than anywhere else.
